After the construction of a large irrigation canal system in the province of Guanacaste in the 1980’s, the Costa Rican government encouraged the development of new alternatives to traditional livestock production. The favorable climate conditions in this area and the opportunity to integrate water usage with local agriculture, together with the proximity to the United States market, allowed Rain Forest Aquaculture to sustainably develop a tilapia production company employs more than 1180 people in Costa Rica and the US.
Ninety percent of Rain Forest tilapia production fresh fillets- is exported to the Unites States, representing 25% of the North American market share.
The Costa Rican tilapia market is also significant, and consumes 10% of Rain Forest Aquaculture’s production. In addition Rain Forest Aquaculture is expanding its sales into Europe.
MISSION AND WORK PHILOSOPHY

• We work together as a team
• We work with passion
• We stand behind our word
• We work with zero waste

Aquacorporación Internacional SA (ACI) pioneered the farming and processing of tilapia in Costa Rica beginning in 1986. Rain Forest Aquaculture, Inc. was created in 1991 to coordinate the sale and distribution of ACI tilapia products primarily within the USA, but also Europe.
Following a period of growth and expansion during the nineties, Empresas AquaChile S.A., a leading producer and global exporter of salmon and trout based in Chile, acquired a majority interest of the company in 2005.
This move further strengthened the management and technical capabilities of the company and consolidated Rain Forest. Rain Forest Aquaculture is a major seafood supplier in the United States. Rain Forest Aquaculture tilapia is available fresh and frozen worldwide supplying the retail, food service and seafood distributors sectors of the marketplace.
